Every year, between April and October, the Onilahy River in Saint-Augustin, in the Toliara II district of southern Madagascar, is transformed into a veritable parade ground for pink flamingos. These majestic birds, recognizable by their pink and white plumage, flock in large numbers to take advantage of the region’s brackish waters and mild climate.
Félix Robinandrianina, a local tourist guide, explains: “This is their season. They arrive en masse between April and October. They usually migrate to Tanzania when Madagascar enters the rainy season. The mouth of Saint-Augustin takes on a lot of volume during the rainy season, which is not good for the flamingos, and that’s why they move to Africa around October.” At this time of year, pink flamingos, accompanied by lesser flamingos, bask in the sunshine, bordered by the imposing limestone cliffs of the Atsimo-Andrefana region.
A unique experience to live
For an unforgettable experience, flamingo watching aboard traditional canoes is a must. These boats allow you to get up close and personal with these large birds, offering a breathtaking view of their majestic wingspan of nearly 1.50 meters. Although they are sensitive to noise and fly away at the slightest splash of a paddle or click of a camera, seeing them take flight in a group is an extraordinary spectacle.
Lake Tsimanampetsotsa, located further south in the communes of Beheloke and Efoetse, is another major point of interest for birdwatching. With its saline waters, this lake is a favored nesting site for flamingos, welcoming thousands of them every year.
Aside from flamingo watching, Saint-Augustin offers a variety of tourist activities. Visitors can explore the Sarodrano lagoon cave or swim in the Andoharano natural pool. Thrill-seekers can enjoy trekking and paragliding. The Tsinjoriake protected area and the Antsakoy arboretum are also not-to-be-missed sites, as is the symbolic crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn for a souvenir photo.
With its breathtaking scenery and numerous attractions, Saint-Augustin is a destination of choice for nature and adventure lovers. Pink flamingos, in particular, add a touch of magic to this paradisiacal corner of Madagascar.
