Entry formalities in Madagascar
To enter Madagascar, certain formalities are required for all types of traveller. Here is an overview of the main requirements and restrictions. For tourists
Valid passport : A valid passport is required for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from Madagascar.
Tourist visa : Compulsory for most foreign travellers. Visas can also be obtained on arrival at Madagascar’s international airport. Prices in 2023 (unchanged for 2024) are as follows :15-day visa: €10 / USD10,30-day visa: 35 € / 37 USD,60-day visa: €40 / 45USD
Return or onward ticket : Proof of a plane ticket to leave Madagascar.
Proof of accommodation : Confirmation of hotel reservation or letter of invitation from a Malagasy resident. In the case of processing by a Tour Operator or Travel Agency, proof of your tourist circuit may be requested.
Proof of sufficient funds : To cover expenses during your stay.
Vaccination certificates : Depending on current health requirements, vaccinations may be necessary or recommended.

You can also import certain optical, photographic, measuring or medical-surgical equipment, subject to certain conditions laid down by customs.
Visas
A visa is required for any foreigner wishing to enter Madagascar.
There are two main types of entry visa : a non-immigrant visa for short stays (tourism, business, internships) and an immigrant visa, which is specially designed for investors, expatriate workers, interns, retirees or people undergoing family reunification procedures.
You should apply for a visa at the Malagasy consulate or diplomatic representation closest to your home.
Restrictions
Certain items require special authorisation to be imported, such as precious woods, agricultural products, precious metals and jewellery, arms and ammunition, and domestic animals.
For non-residents, an export declaration is required for precious metals and hallmarked jewellery whose total weight exceeds 1 kg.
Foreign currency in excess of 10,000,000 Ariary must be declared to customs.
