Mantadia Lodge

The journey east from Antananarivo ends with a final ascent, a road that winds up a forested hill to a clearing. The main lodge building, with its timber beams and stone foundations, opens on to a wide terrace. From this elevation, the rainforest of the Mantadia Valley spreads below, a continuous canopy of green stretching to the horizon. The air is cool, filled with the scent of damp earth and the first calls of unseen creatures from the trees.

Your private bungalow sits apart from the main building, connected by a stone pathway. Inside, polished rosewood floors lead to a bed orientated towards floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the forest. Days begin on the main terrace, watching the morning mist burn off the valley, or at the infinity pool that seems to drop directly into the canopy. In the evening, guests gather around the central stone fireplace in the bar, sharing stories from the day’s treks before a dinner of zebu steak with wild pepper or river fish steamed in ravinala leaves.

At dawn, you wake to the indri’s song, an ethereal call that carries for miles across the valley. A private guide leads you into the dense primary forest of Mantadia National Park, tracking the calls to find a family of these black-and-white lemurs as they leap between branches high above. Afternoons are for quieter exploration in the Analamazaotra Reserve, seeking out the camouflaged Parson’s chameleon or the nocturnal mouse lemur that emerges at dusk. The lodge is a base for direct encounters with the unique life of this eastern rainforest.
