Andasibe Area
The most accessible corridor of eastern rainforest, where the call of the indri echoes through the canopy just a few hours' drive from Antananarivo.
The morning starts not with an alarm, but with the high, clear call of the indri, a sound that carries for kilometres across the canopy. This is the defining experience of the Andasibe area: a full immersion in primary rainforest that begins just three hours from the capital. Unlike more distant parks that require flights or long overland drives, Andasibe delivers the moss, the mist and the lemurs of the eastern escarpment with logistical ease.
The journey is a straightforward 150-kilometre drive east from Antananarivo along the RN2. Whilst accessible year-round, the experience shifts with the seasons. May to October offers drier trails and clearer skies, ideal for general wildlife viewing. From November to April, the forest is heavier with rain, the vegetation thicker, and the air damp. It is a period favoured by botanists and photographers for the intensity of the green.

Frequently asked questions
A minimum of two nights is recommended. This allows for a night walk on arrival, an early morning visit to hear the indri, and a full day to explore either Analamazaotra or Mantadia.
Analamazaotra offers easier, shorter circuits focused on the indri. Mantadia requires more time and physical effort for longer treks in a wilder, less frequented forest.
No, the area is reached via the tarmacked RN2 from Antananarivo. The entrances to the main reserves are close to the road and accessible by a standard saloon car.
The indri are most vocal in the early morning, typically from dawn until around 10 a.m. An early start is therefore essential for this experience.
