The city of Antsiranana curves around one of the world’s largest natural bays, a deep-water harbour that has shaped its identity for centuries. This is not a resort town; it is a working port, the clear starting point for overland expeditions. Where Nosy Be centres on island leisure, Diego Suarez is defined by what lies beyond the city limits: the red-earth tracks leading to empty coves, the limestone massifs, and the constant wind that shapes the landscape.
A short flight from Antananarivo lands one at Arrachart Airport, just outside the city. A minimum of three full days is needed to explore the immediate area: the bays and the city itself. Most excursions, such as the track to the Three Bays, require a 4×4. The dry season from April to November is best, as rain can make the unmade tracks to the bays impassable. The wind, known as the Varatraza, picks up from June to September, making the Emerald Sea a prime kitesurfing location.

Yes. Whilst the city and the road to Ramena are tarmacked, accessing the Three Bays and other coastal tracks requires a 4x4 vehicle with a driver.
