Mandrare River Camp

The journey south concludes not at an airport, but on a private airstrip cut from the scrubland. A short drive delivers you to the banks of the Mandrare River, where the camp reveals itself beneath a canopy of mature tamarind trees. Your arrival is quiet, marked only by the flow of the river and the distant sounds of village life. There is no formal reception; instead, you are guided directly to your tent, stepping from the sun-scorched earth into cool canvas shade.

Days are unscripted, shaped by the seasons and the movement of wildlife. With your guide, you cross the riverbed on foot to track Verreaux’s sifaka and ring-tailed lemurs in the gallery forest. You might spend an afternoon visiting a local Antandroy market or observing a traditional ceremony. Evenings begin with drinks by the water as the sky turns violet, followed by dinner prepared with local ingredients. After dark, the forest awakens, and a night walk reveals the miniature world of mouse lemurs and sleeping chameleons.

The camp exists in symbiosis with its environment. Just beyond your tent lies the sacred spiny forest of Ifotaka, a landscape of Didier’s octopus trees and Alluaudia that is protected by the local Antandroy people. This is their land, and the experience here is one of shared discovery. You explore ancestral tombs, learn the stories held within the trees, and come to understand a way of life dictated by the river and the spirits of the forest.
