Voaara

Arrival at Voaara is a shedding of layers. From the island airstrip, a sandy track winds through coconut groves, the sounds of the village giving way to the rhythm of the tide. You step out on to a kilometre and a half of shoreline reserved for just seven bungalows and a private villa. The property is not built upon the land, but woven into it: a line of thatched roofs peeking from between palms, the forest floor meeting the high-tide mark.

Days unfold without a fixed schedule. You might follow a local guide into the forest for a morning hike, or take a pirogue out to the reef for snorkelling. Afternoons are for the water: surfing the outer breaks or watching the dhows sail past from your veranda. During the whale season, from June to September, the channel becomes a theatre for breaching humpbacks. Evenings begin with cocktails on the sand, the menu dictated by the day’s catch from local fishermen.

Voaara exists in conversation with its surroundings. The property’s minimalist design, using local materials, defers to the landscape.
