Mitsinjo Reserve in Andasibe

Located about 140 km east of Antananarivo, in the Alaotra-Mangoro region, the Mitsinjo Reserve is a community-managed protected area, situated right next to the entrance of the Analamazaotra-Andasibe National Park. It is managed by the Mitsinjo Association, a community-based organization founded in 1999 by local residents with the goal of protecting the surrounding rainforest and wetlands. According to available information, the association also manages the Analamazaotra Forest Station independently of the national park, in collaboration with local communities.

Conservation and Protection Efforts :

Reforestation : Mitsinjo operates two nurseries that produce around 40,000 seedlings of native plant species each year. These are used to restore degraded ecosystems. So far, more than 500 hectares have been reforested. Visitors can actively participate in this effort by sponsoring or planting a tree.

Wildlife Protection : The reserve serves as a haven for many animal species, including several lemurs such as the Indri, the bamboo lemur, and the black-and-white ruffed lemur. It is also home to over 100 amphibian species, including the famous golden mantella (Mantella aurantiaca). Illegal hunting and logging activities have been significantly reduced thanks to strong community involvement.

Amphibian Breeding Center :In 2011, Mitsinjo established Madagascar’s first amphibian breeding and conservation center, aimed at protecting species threatened by habitat loss and emerging diseases.

An Immersive Visitor Experience :

The tours offered by Mitsinjo focus on ecotourism and environmental education. They include participatory reforestation, amphibian discovery, Indri observation, visits to the village of Andasibe, and a small orchid garden — particularly worth visiting between September and November during the blooming season. For those seeking a more extensive immersion in biodiversity, the larger nearby parks may offer a broader experience.

Activities include:

Hiking trails: Over 12 km of marked trails, with guided daytime and nighttime walks lasting from 1 to 5 hours.
Nature and adventure experiences: Canopy climbing, zip-lining, and overnight stays in hammocks through the GasiClimb program.
Local guides: All visits are led by qualified local guides. Prices range from 30,000 to 65,000 Ariary.

Community impact: Revenue from visits supports local projects in education, healthcare, and sustainable agriculture.
