Sainte-Marie, a small island 58 km long and 5 km wide, offers various transport options for visitors wishing to explore it.
By Mountain Bike
The southern part of the island, between Île aux Nattes and Ambodifotatra, is relatively flat and ideal for cycling. However, heading towards Loukintsy, the roads become more challenging with sharp bends, climbs, and descents. Some tracks are completely unsuitable for mountain bikes.
Bikes can be rented in Ambodifotatra and at several hotels, which often use external providers. Before setting off, it is essential to check the condition of the bike, especially the brakes and tyres.
By Motorbike and Scooter
A scooter is ideal for travelling from north to south along the tarmacked road. However, the eastern coast is accessible only via a rough track, especially in the north, where a motocross bike is preferable. This option is reserved for experienced riders, who should be prepared for plenty of mud.
Rentals are mainly available in Ambodifotatra or through hotels. Prices are around 60,000 Ar per day for a scooter and 80,000 Ar for a motocross bike. It is crucial to inspect the vehicle before setting off, as breakdowns are not uncommon (worn tyres, fragile chains, etc.).
Precautions
Most rental companies only cover third-party damage and not damage to the vehicle itself. If a deposit or passport is requested, ensure you receive a contract and the vehicle’s documents. Always wear a helmet and carry your driving licence, as checks are frequent. Finally, avoid riding at night and drive cautiously: although the tarmacked road makes travel easier, it has been the site of numerous serious accidents.
