The town of Ambalavao marks a clear shift. South of the central highlands, the architecture changes, the air feels drier, and the RN7 becomes a corridor into Betsileo country. Here, the focus is on craft and trade; workshops press wild flowers into Antemoro paper, and the zebu market defines the town’s rhythm. This human scale stands in sharp contrast to what lies just beyond: the sheer granite faces of the Andringitra Massif, a vertical landscape that draws the eye upward to its ridgelines.
A visit here is a journey in two parts. Ambalavao itself is an easy stop on the main north-south route, requiring only a few hours to visit the paper co-operative and appreciate the pace of the town. Andringitra, however, demands a greater commitment. The turning leads to a rougher track, and to do the park justice requires a minimum of two full days for a trek into the higher valleys. The best conditions for trekking are from April to November, when the trails are dry, whilst nights at altitude can be cold from June to August.
