Madagascar by Sea: Private Shore Excursions

Nosy Be serves as a hub for exploring the Mozambique Channel's marine ecosystems and the island's Sakalava culture. A short boat transfer brings you to Nosy Komba to observe semi-habituated Black lemurs, followed by snorkeling in the protected coral gardens of Nosy Tanikely, frequented by green and hawksbill turtles. For a more profound forest immersion, we arrange a trip by traditional pirogue into Lokobe Special Reserve, a remnant of primary Sambirano rainforest, to find endemic species like the Black lemur (Eulemur macaco) and the panther chameleon. If your ship docks further north at Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), excursions focus on the region’s dramatic topography. We explore the succession of Sakalava, Dune, and Pigeon Bays, noted for their white sands and turquoise waters, or drive inland to the cooler, montane rainforest of Amber Mountain National Park.

Morondava, on the west coast, is the access point to the Menabe region's singular landscapes. The primary excursion is timed for the late afternoon light at the Avenue of the Baobabs, where the ancient Adansonia grandidieri trees create powerful silhouettes against the setting sun. The experience includes opportunities to visit local Sakalava villages and understand the connection between the people and this arid, red-earth environment. In the far south, the port of Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin) provides entry into Madagascar's most alien ecosystem: the spiny thicket. At Berenty Reserve, you can walk among Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) and Verreaux’s sifakas, and learn to identify the endemic flora, including the tentacled Didiereaceae, or octopus trees, which define this arid, otherworldly biome.
