Traditional Canoes in Madagascar : a more ecological transport option

Navigating the calm waters of a river, away from the noise of engines, and solely powered by the current and the steady strokes of a local paddler, is one of the most natural experiences you can have in Madagascar. Traditional canoes are still widely used as a means of transportation to explore remote areas while remaining environmentally friendly.

This mode of transport, simple and natural, offers many advantages. It is not only one of the most economical ways to travel, but it also allows you to experience the beauty of the landscapes at a leisurely pace, in complete harmony with nature. One of the most famous examples is the descent of the Tsiribihina River, a journey of 3 to 5 days (or 2 to 4 nights) in a canoe, where you travel about 7 hours per day (beware of the heat).

Traveling by canoe can be a thrilling adventure and is more respectful of the environment. However, it is important to consider the limitations of this traditional transport: canoes can only accommodate 3 to 4 tourists, in addition to the paddler and possibly a guide. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it is recommended to choose a guide or paddler recommended by a local agency or a trusted person.

Before embarking on this adventure, be sure to gather proper information. Avoid touts at the airport or in town and be cautious of unofficial intermediaries. Rates for a canoe descent range between 30,000 and 350,000 Ar per person, all-inclusive. Don’t forget to add a tip for the guide and paddler at the end of the trip.
