The Twelve Sacred Hills of Imerina

A circuit of royal citadels and ancestral tombs scattered across the highlands, each hill a chapter in the history of the Merina Kingdom.

From the ramparts of one royal hill, another appears on the horizon, a silhouette against the terraced rice fields of the highlands. This is not a single site but a constellation of them, each marking a center of power, a royal tomb, or a place of ritual that defined the Merina Kingdom. Where Antananarivo is a dense urban center, these hills offer a quieter, more dispersed narrative of the region’s history, written in stone walls and sacred trees.

A visit to all twelve hills is a multi-day project, impractical for most itineraries. A more focused approach, concentrating on two or three key sites like Ambohimanga, Ilafy, and Antsahadinta, can be completed in a full day from Antananarivo with a dedicated vehicle and guide. While some hills are near asphalt roads, reaching others like Antongona requires a 4×4, especially during the wetter months from November to March when dirt tracks become difficult.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to visit all 12 hills? ►

No, visiting all twelve is logistically challenging and not recommended for most travelers. A curated selection of 2-3 hills provides a comprehensive experience without the extensive travel time.

How much time should we allocate for a visit? ►

A half-day is sufficient for Ambohimanga alone. A full day allows for visiting Ambohimanga plus one or two other nearby hills like Ilafy or Ambohidratrimo.

Are guides required for these sites? ►

Yes, local site guides are mandatory at major hills like Ambohimanga and highly recommended elsewhere to understand the history and cultural protocols. Vivy Travel coordinates these guides.

What is the difference between Ambohimanga and the other hills? ►

Ambohimanga is a fully preserved royal city and a UNESCO site with intact structures. Most other hills are primarily archaeological sites with ruins, tombs, and historical significance but fewer complete buildings.
