Masoala National Park, A land and sea park.

On the Masoala Peninsula, accessible primarily from Maroantsetra, Masoala National Park — the largest in Madagascar — generates considerable tourist interest. Bounded by the Indian Ocean to the east and Antongil Bay to the west, the park is surrounded by several protected areas. Together, Masoala National Park and the Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve form the largest natural protected area on the island, covering a total area of 240,520 hectares.

Masoala National Park is one of six national parks on Madagascar’s east coast, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the name “Rainforests of the Atsinanana.”

A park with varied altitudes :

Masoala National Park stretches across terrain of varying elevations, ranging from sea level up to 1,311 meters. This topographical diversity gives the peninsula a highly irregular relief, where a coastal plain extends between Tampolo and Cape Masoala.

To the east, the landscape opens into a coastal plain that can reach up to 15 km in width. Along this rugged coastline, rocky cliffs blend with sandy bays, while marine reefs rise just offshore. Masoala stands out as one of the rare regions of Madagascar where the forest edge meets the sea directly.

A fragile forest corridor connects the wooded expanses of the Masoala Peninsula to the Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve and the Makira Plateau, showcasing the richness and ecological continuity of this exceptional region.

A glimpse of the park’s biodiversity :

There is nothing quite like Masoala National Park anywhere else in the world. Its rainforest is among the most lush and unique ecosystems in Madagascar. Within its dense vegetation thrive precious hardwoods such as ebony and rosewood, alongside numerous orchid species, many of which remain to be discovered.

From over 60 species of reptiles and amphibians to 10 species of lemurs — including the nocturnal Aye-AyeMasoala’s forest teems with life far beyond expectation. The canopy resonates with the calls of more than 90 bird species, while butterflies and countless insects add flashes of color to the landscape, creating a truly spectacular soundscape.

As in all national parks in Madagascar, the most iconic inhabitants remain the lemurs. Species such as the Red Ruffed Lemur and the Eastern Avahi inhabit the park. Remarkable birds such as the Helmet Vanga and the Madagascar Red Owl further enhance the region’s natural splendor.

Getting to Masoala National Park :

Reaching Masoala marks the beginning of a true adventure. Access is typically by sea from the town of Maroantsetra. Travelers can take a domestic flight from Antananarivo to Maroantsetra, or choose a combination of land and river travel from other coastal cities — though this latter option can be challenging without experienced local guidance.

From Maroantsetra, visitors cross Antongil Bay by boat to reach the peninsula. The crossing itself offers spectacular scenery, and during whale season, it is sometimes possible to spot humpback whales along the way.

For those seeking comfort and efficiency, private charter flights to Maroantsetra are also available, followed by a private boat transfer to the peninsula.
