Getting from Ambanja to Ankify

To reach Ankify from Ambanja, you’ll need to travel about 30 kilometers west on a mostly paved road. The journey takes around 45 minutes by car and passes through a scenic agricultural region with cocoa, spice, and vanilla plantations, mangroves, and a few traditional villages. The road ends at the port of Ankify, the main gateway by sea to Nosy Be and the surrounding islands.

Located about 15 kilometers south of the Ankify pier (as the crow flies), Ambanja is a lively commercial town along the Sambirano River. It lies at the heart of a fertile region, once developed during the colonial era, and is known for its rich variety of crops: cocoa, pepper, ylang-ylang, vanilla, sweet potatoes, cassava, rice, and tobacco. The star product here is cocoa, famously used in the making of Madagascar’s Robert chocolate.

Travelers usually make their way from Ambanja to Ankify by bush taxi, private taxi, or personal vehicle. More of a port than a village, Ankify consists of a few scattered houses, some hidden hotels in the lush greenery, and a boat terminal. It’s best to arrive before 3 PM, as the sea tends to get rough later in the day. This stop is also ideal if you want to visit the cocoa plantations or if you miss the last boat to Nosy Be.

Once in Ankify, you’ll find peaceful beaches, lush vegetation, and great opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and wildlife spotting (including chameleons, lemurs, and tropical birds). From here, you can easily catch a boat to Nosy Be, Nosy Komba, or Nosy Tanikely.
