Cheap hotels: an economic choice to consider

If you are travelling to Madagascar on a limited budget, you’ll be pleased to know that there are many affordable small hotels that can offer you simple yet comfortable accommodation (with a good selection and intuition, of course). However, be careful not to confuse them with the local restaurants specialising in Vary sy Laoka (rice and side dishes) that are called “hotely,” which paradoxically share the same name.

These small lodging establishments typically follow a similar model: bungalows made of falafa, with cement or concrete floors, or small brick houses that are often poorly painted. Sometimes the walls are solid, adding a bit of sturdiness to these simple structures. Most rooms are equipped with a bed, a light bulb, and, in some tourist areas, a small terrace to relax on. Generally, the comfort level is minimal, with mattresses often made of foam.

For the cheapest places, the sanitation facilities are often shared, with “Malagasy-style” showers: a simple basin, a water reservoir, and a container to pour the water. In larger towns, some hotels may offer proper showers. Additionally, some establishments are equipped with solar panels to provide hot water, but these rarely work, so it’s wise to prepare for a cold shower.

Despite the basic comfort, many of these small hotels are located in well-positioned and peaceful environments: in tropical gardens, under palm trees by the sea, or near national parks, in remote villages. This can more than make up for the simplicity of the facilities.

Before you go, it is essential to pack certain items to make your stay more pleasant. Bring your own toilet paper, which is readily available in local shops. A sheet or something to cover a questionable mattress, soap, a towel, and, most importantly, your own mosquito net are also recommended.

In summary, cheap hotels in Madagascar can be a lifesaver if you want to limit your budget at all costs, but it is advisable to seek advice from your local guide, from local agencies, or to check reviews online to avoid the worst hotels, especially in terms of hygiene.
