Crocodiles of Madagascar

Did you know that Madagascar also hosts a population of crocodiles? These are not additional exotic reptiles, but representatives of the famous Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), an iconic species of the African continent.

The Nile crocodile is one of the largest reptiles in the world and plays a crucial role in the ecological balance of its environments. Currently, residential populations of these crocodiles are found in some rivers in the western part of Madagascar, such as the Tsiribihina, Manombolo, and Betsiboka. These rivers provide an ideal habitat for these formidable predators, where they live in harmony with the local nature. You might even spot them during your adventure if you descend the Tsiribihina River by traditional canoe.

Considered sacred, these crocodiles are particularly revered in Malagasy culture. Their average size generally ranges between 2.5 and 3 meters in length, although some older individuals can reach up to 5 meters. These imposing reptiles are both feared and highly respected, and their presence reflects a symbolism in local traditions.
