Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park is located in the Atsimo-Andrefana region, about 150 kmnortheast of Toliara, along the well-known Route Nationale 7. Covering over 36,000 hectares, it was established in 2002 and plays a key role in protecting Madagascar’s biodiversity. The park includes three main areas: Zombitse dry forest, the Vohibasia savannah, and the Isoky Vohimena zone.
It lies in a transition zone between dry forest and humid forest, making it one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country. Over 85 bird species live here, nearly half of them endemic. One of the most notable is Appert’s Tetraka, which exists only in this park. Among the mammals, the park is best known for Hubbard’s sportive lemur, a rare species found nowhere else.
The plant life is also remarkable. Visitors can see large baobab trees, wild orchids, aloe plants, and other species typical of southern Madagascar. These forests are important habitats for species that don’t exist elsewhere on the island.
Despite its natural value, the park is still little visited. It is easily accessible from Isalo or Toliara, and its short, easy trails offer a peaceful experience in nature. It’s an ideal place for birdwatchers, hikers, or anyone looking to enjoy the natural environment in a quiet setting.
The park is also part of the traditional lands of the Bara and Mahafaly people, who mainly work in cattle farming. However, human activity such as farming, bushfires, and charcoal production puts pressure on this fragile area.
Zombitse-Vohibasia is home to around 20 species of mammals, including 8 species of lemurs. There are also many reptiles, amphibians, insects, and many plant species. Scientists have recorded 33 species of amphibians here, as well as a large number of insects that are only found in this part of Madagascar. The dry, semi-deciduous forest is home to rare plant families such as Didieraceae, along with various acacia and fig trees.
