Cape Amber, the Northern Tip of Madagascar (Cap d’Ambre)

Cape Amber (Le cap d’Ambre), or Tanjona Bobaomby in Malagasy, is the northernmost point of Madagascar. It lies in the Antsiranana region, about 70 kilometers north of Diego Suarez. This is where the Indian Ocean meets the Mozambique Channel, marked by a lighthouse that was recently rebuilt.

The area can only be reached during the dry season, usually by 4×4, after a rough five-hour drive across remote landscapes. Some travel agencies offer a combined experience: reaching the cape by vehicle and returning by boat through the Emerald Sea. The journey is unique, though it remains relatively costly.

Cape Amber is known for its towering cliffs shaped by the ocean, its untouched beaches, and its crystal-clear waters rich in marine life. It is also a popular area for lobster fishing and, at certain times of the year, for spotting whales passing offshore.

Wild and largely preserved, Cape Amber remains a remote destination. Strong southern winds known as the Vataraza can make navigation difficult outside certain periods of the year. For travelers seeking open horizons, the sea, and a true sense of adventure far from the crowds, this northern tip of Madagascar offers a remarkable experience.

Plan your trip to Cape Amber with trusted local guides and experience Madagascar’s northernmost beauty safely.
