The Indri (Indri indri), commonly known by its scientific name, is an iconic animal from eastern Madagascar. With its black-and-white fur, piercing eyes, and powerful calls, it makes a strong impression at first sight. It lives exclusively in the humid forests of the island’s east and requires large forest territories to survive.
The Indri is the largest living lemur. It measures about 60 to 70 cm (excluding the tail, which is almost absent) and can weigh up to 9.5 kg. Its soft, contrasting coat varies from one individual to another. This large primate spends its entire life in the trees, leaping from branch to branch with incredible agility.
What makes it even more remarkable is its voice. The indri emits long, powerful calls that can be heard several kilometers away. These vocalizations help mark territory and maintain strong bonds between members of the same group.
Indris live in small family groups and are known for their loyalty. Once a pair forms, it usually stays together for life. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, but they also eat fruits, flowers, and seeds. This diet helps disperse seeds throughout the forest, making the Indri an essential contributor to its ecosystem.
Sadly, the Indri is under serious threat. Habitat destruction caused by deforestation and illegal hunting is putting its survival at risk. As a result, it can now be found only in a limited number of protected areas.
