Trail Running in Madagascar

Trail Running in Madagascar

Good news for those who enjoy high-intensity sports. Madagascar is a fantastic destination for trail running enthusiasts. With its wide variety of landscapes and rich biodiversity, trail running has become one of the island’s signature outdoor experiences. Several major races take place across the country. These routes are often demanding, taking runners through remote regions and national parks. Each event offers a mix of physical challenge, natural immersion, and a friendly, adventurous atmosphere.

Some of the most popular trail events include:

UltraMad Madagascar
A 156 km ultra-trail split into four stages, with a total climb of 7,260 metres. The route covers diverse terrain from the central to southern regions of the island and includes the ascent of Pic Boby, Madagascar’s second-highest peak at 2,658 metres. This is a tough race, officially qualifying for the UTMB, and is praised for its dramatic landscapes.

Red Island Trail
This six-day race spans 125 km with 1,380 metres of elevation gain. Participants run across the Highlands, rice fields, and valleys before reaching the beaches of Morondava. The route passes through the UNESCO-listed Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park and the famous Avenue of the Baobabs. The event combines sport, discovery, and social commitment.

Madagascar Ultra Trail Run
A six-day, 150 km challenge located in the north of the island. The course takes runners through rivers, red canyons, plateaus, and coastal paths. Nights are spent camping, and the experience includes meaningful interactions with local communities. The event promotes eco-tourism and sustainable travel as much as physical endurance.

Other events such as the Ultra Trail des Ô Plateaux, Trail d’Ibity, Trail Ambodirano and the Ultra Trek des Collines Sacrées d’Analamanga offer a range of distances, from just a few kilometres to over 150. Full race schedules and registration information are available on platforms like Ahotu.

For runners who prefer shorter or non-competitive routes, Madagascar offers many scenic trails through tropical forests, beaches, highlands, hills, and canyons. Websites like Komoot list a variety of routes suitable for intermediate runners from 8 km, as well as more advanced options beyond 18 km.

Keep in mind that trail running in Madagascar requires good preparation. Conditions can be tough, with heat, rugged paths, and remote areas. However, the experience is truly rewarding. It is a chance to explore the raw beauty of the island and to meet local people who are often passionate about this sport. Most races are held between March and November. It is highly recommended to consult organisers or a trusted local agency before taking part.
